I am a Research Fellow in Energy Systems with the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications and a member of the Real-time Digital Simulation Laboratory (RTS@UNSW) research group.

I received my B.Sc. degree and the Professional Title in Electrical Engineering from the University of Chile, Chile, in 2013 and 2014, respectively, and the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UNSW Sydney, Australia, in 2022. From 2014 to 2016 I worked as a Power System Analyst in Transelec, Chile. While pursuing my Ph.D. I collaborated and worked together with OPAL-RT Technologies (2020-2022).

One of my primary career interests is to generate, share and transfer knowledge in the field of electrical engineering. I have both industry and research experience, that I believe, are essential when teaching new generation of engineers as well as carrying out research that bridges the gap between both worlds.

My research interests include:

  • Power system digital twins
  • Real-time digital modeling and simulation
  • Synthetic grids
  • Grid integration of renewable energy resources and energy storage systems

My Qualifications

  • Ph.D., Electrical Engineering, UNSW Sydney, Australia, 2018-2022.
  • Electrical Engineering Diploma, University of Chile, Chile, 2008-2013.
  • B.Eng.Sc. Electrical Engineering, University of Chile, Chile, 2008-2013.

My Awards

  • Best Paper Award, IEEE International Smart Grid Technologies (IEEE ISGT Asia), 2021.
  • Graduate Collaborative Research Award, Universitas 21, 2019.
  • Student Travel Award, IEEE Power Electronics Society, 2019.
  • Becas Chile Scholarship, ANID (formerly CONICYT), 2017.
  • High Honour, University of Chile, 2013-2014.

My Research Supervision

Currently supervising

  • Joint supervision:
    • Ph.D. (2022-): Geographically Distributed Real-time Simulation with Multi-application Artificial Intelligence for Large-scale Power Systems
    • Ph.D. (2021-): Coordinated Control and planning of Energy Storage and Renewable Energy Resources
  • Secondary supervision:
    • Master of Philosophy (2022-): Fault analysis in hybrid multi-terminal HVDC systems

My Teaching

I am currently (co-)lecturing:

  • ELEC9719 - Real-Time Digital Simulations
  • ELEC1111 - Electrical Circuit Fundamentals

I am also an invited lecturer:

  • EIE740 - Advanced Topics in Modern Power Systems
