Dr Julie Thoms is a Senior Research Associate in the Stem Cell Group at the Lowy Cancer Research Centre. Her primary research interests lie in understanding how gene regulatory networks control stem cell characteristics in normal and malignant cells, with the ultimate aim of using this knowledge to develop targeted cancer therapies. Julie received her PhD from the University of Sydney and then undertook postdoctoral studies under the mentorship of Dr Anthony Bretscher at Cornell University (USA), and Dr Stuart Kauffman at the University of Calgary (Canada). Julie then returned to Sydney to work with Dr John Pimanda at UNSW, where she has used a range of cutting edge genomic techniques to investigate the transcriptional networks controlled by ERG and other key stem cell transcription factors during normal development and in leukemia.
