Dr Md Zakir Hossain is a Lecturer in the School of Systems and Computing (SysCom) at UNSW Canberra. Dr Md Zakir Hossain is a Lecturer in the School of Systems and Computing (SysCom) at UNSW Canberra. His research focuses on Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, affective and human-centred computing, multimodal learning, and digital health, with an emphasis on developing responsible and practical AI solutions for complex real-world problems. His broader research interests include large language models, computer vision, natural language processing, explainable AI, and privacy-preserving AI.
Dr Hossain received his PhD in Computer Science from the Australian National University (ANU). Before joining UNSW Canberra, he was a Research Academic at ANU's School of Medicine and Psychology and previously held research and academic positions at Curtin University, CSIRO, Macquarie University, and ANU. Before moving to Australia, he was an academic in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in Bangladesh.
His interdisciplinary research has contributed to applications in health informatics, medical and physiological data analysis, human behaviour and personality modelling, affective computing, agriculture, and environmental monitoring. He has collaborated with academic, government, healthcare, and industry partners, including CSIRO, WA Health, Fiona Stanley Hospital, Perth Blood Institute, Seeing Machines, and SalTas, translating AI and data science methods into applied solutions.
He has published extensively in international journals and conferences, including IEEE TPAMI, IEEE TAFFC, IEEE JSTSP, MICCAI, ICASSP, WACV, and ICMI, and his collaborative research received the Best Application Paper Award at IEEE/CVF WACV 2023. He contributes actively to the research community through conference organisation, peer review, workshops, tutorials, and research supervision.
With more than a decade of university teaching experience, Dr Hossain has taught across AI, machine learning, computer vision, cybersecurity, networking, human–computer interaction, and data science, and has supervised PhD, master's, honours, and undergraduate researchers. He is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) and is committed to interdisciplinary, research-led education and the development of responsible, human-centred AI systems with real-world impact.
