Naomi Stringer is a Research Associate at the at the School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering (SPREE) and Collaboration on Energy and Environmental Markets (CEEM) at UNSW Sydney, Australia. Her key research interest is the integration of Distributed Energy Resources in the electricity sector, particularly on the power system security impacts of distributed PV. Naomi’s research is undertaken in collaboration with electricity industry stakeholders and includes the development of open source analytical techniques to leverage real-world operational data sets.

Naomi is currently leading Project MATCH in collaboration with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) and solar monitoring company Solar Analytics. The $2.19m project started in January 2021 and will run for three years. It received $981,000 funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency to undertake critical analysis of DER behaviour during major power system disturbances. For further details refer to the project webpage linked below.

In 2018 Naomi was awarded the Australian Institute of Energy (AIE) Youth Scholarship. In May-June 2019 she travelled to Hawaii, California, Colorado and the UK to meet with stakeholders from 24 organisations in order to investigate DER integration mechanisms internationally.

Naomi holds a B.E. in Renewable Energy from UNSW Sydney, Australia.

My Research Activities

Project MATCH ('Monitoring and Analysis Toolbox for Compliance in a High DER future)

  • ARENA funded project to investigate the behaviour of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) during major power system disturbances in collaboration with AEMO and Solar Analytics.
  • The key objective is to establish robust characterisation of DER behaviour during power system disturbances, to support a secure and reliable power system with high levels of DER.

Project CANVAS (Curtailment and Network Voltage Analysis Scope study)

  • The first project to be funded under the RACE for 2030 CRC, this 'scoping study' is being undertaken in collaboration with AGL, Solar Analytics and SA Power Networks.
  • It aims to investigate socio-technical aspects of distributed solar PV curtailment in Australia to inform a further body of work.
