Lecturer and ARC DECRA Fellow in the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering

Dr Da (Daniel) Chen is an ARC DECRA fellow and a Lecturer at School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, UNSW Sydney. He also holds honorary appointments in the University of Melbourne (UoM) and the University of Queensland (UQ).

In June 2018, Daniel obtained his PhD in Structural Engineering from School of Civil Engineering, UQ with the topic: Static and Dynamic Analysis of Functionally Graded Porous Structures, where he systemically examined the bending, buckling, vibration, and energy absorption of innovative composite structural forms made of metal foams and featured by graded porosities. After PhD, he embarked on new research related to novel vibration absorbers, offshore fish cages, and wheel-rail interactions within Blue economy CRC, School of Civil Engineering (UQ), and School of Mechanical & Mining Engineering (UQ).

During May 2021 to May 2022, Daniel joined Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, and was affiliated with Division Mechanics of Functional Materials (MFM) and Institute of Structural Mechanics and Design (ISMD). He continued his journey on porous structures and extended his study towards the multi-scale modelling and deep learning. From May 2022 to April 2023, he worked at the Department of Infrastructure Engineering, UoM under his DECRA project: Smart Optimisation of Functionally Graded Porous Structures. Meanwhile, he was involved in the experimental investigation of advanced composite concrete columns and structural health monitoring of bridges and road networks.

Daniel started his role in School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, UNSW Sydney as a Lecturer from May 2023. He is within the world’s top 2% scientists (single-year ranking, Stanford University), based on October 2023 data-update for "Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators".
