The UNSW Animal Care and Ethics Committees offers courses for researchers and students who use animals in research and teaching. Under the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes, 2013 (8th edition), investigators must undertake education, training and competency assessment, in accordance with institutional and ACEC policies and procedures.

The Animal Ethics and Care course is now available online. This online course provides an introduction to the ethical and scientific issues of using animals for scientific purposes as well as providing an introduction to animal handling and basic procedures in mice and rats. The course is suitable for all personnel involved with the care and use of animals for teaching and research.
The Animal Ethics and Care Refresher course is now available online.
This refresher course provides a review of the ethical issues and legislative requirements for all involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes. It focuses on the UNSW animal ethics processes and provides the most recent updates with the Animal Research Act, the Regulations and the Code.
Registration Instructions:
- Registration is via myUNSW.
- Select "My Staff Profile" and "Learning and Development" and choose "Course Number" and search for "ACECOR"
- Once you have registered, you will receive an email notifying you if registration is successful. The course will be available 24 hours after registration on Moodle.
Access the CARE Online Course
Individual and small group practical training in specific laboratory animal procedures are available on request to the RECS Animal Care Unit. These training sessions are available for all UNSW staff and students working with research animals.Competency training is provided in numerous techniques and species.

This course was designed to provide new members of the UNSW Animal Care & Ethics Committees (ACECs) with an understanding of the animal ethics legislation and codes of practice and the processes and responsibilities at UNSW. The course is also available to members of the UNSW research community should they wish to further understand the framework for the UNSW ACECs and their decision making process. Please note this course is not mandatory for members of the research community.
The course is self-paced, comprising of three modules which take approximately 30 minutes each to complete.

The "Using Therapeutic Goods for Research at UNSW" is an interactive online course that outlines the national and state legislations relevant to therapeutic goods, UNSW procedures for purchasing, storage requirements, disposal, record keeping and reporting for S4D, S8 and S9 substances.
