He is also a member of the Council of the Actuaries Institute. He believes that the actuarial profession fulfils its social role by creating financial security. He has attempted in his career to contribute to this at different times by:
- Developing products that more closely meet people's needs, particularly in life insurance companies and retirement funds.
- Focusing the role of the actuarial profession on financial security by university teaching and research.
- Contributing to government policy largely by submissions on issues of the day.
- Serving as manager, consultant and non-executive director

My Research Activities
My current research is focused on the development of appropriate retirement income products, including product design, investment, regulation and personal financial advice. This is closely related to my position as Convenor of the Retirement Income Working Group of the Actuaries Institute. I am also working on an understanding of greed and justice in society that incorporates recent development in neuroscience and more ancient philosophical and religious approaches.
