He was awarded a 2015 Society for Mental Health Research Fellowship for his project on follow-up supportive text messages following a visit to the emergency department after a suicide attempt.

Dr Larsen completed his DPhil in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Oxford, and received a Masters in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde. His doctoral thesis developed and evaluated mobile phone apps for self-management in type 2 diabetes, and symptom management during chemotherapy. He completed post-doctoral training at the University of Oxford and the Department of Primary Care and Public Health at Imperial College London. He is a member of the Society for Mental Health Research, the IET Healthcare Technologies Network, the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, and the Editorial Board of JMIR Mental Health.
