A/Prof. Mayooran Namasivayam, MBBS(1st Class Hons.), BSc(Med)Hons(1st Class), PhD, FRACP, FCSANZ, FACC, FASE, is a staff specialist cardiologist and cardiac imaging specialist at the St. Vincent’s Hospital Campus, Sydney. He is the Associate Director of Echocardiography at St. Vincent’s Hospital. A/Prof. Namasivayam manages patients across the spectrum of cardiovascular disease but has particular expertise in managing patients with valvular heart diseases, systolic and diastolic heart failure, cardiomyopathy and hypertension. A/Prof. Namasivayam is actively involved in the structural heart interventional program as an interventional echocardiography specialist, and has expertise in providing procedural image guidance for a variety of minimally invasive transcatheter procedures including transcatheter heart valve repair and replacement (including transcatheter aortic, mitral and tricuspid valve repair and replacement), atrial and ventricular septal defect repair, left atrial appendage closure and prosthetic paravalvular leak repair. He has performed over 1000 transoesophageal echocardiography procedures.
A/Prof. Namasivayam graduated medical school from the University of New South Wales with First Class Honours and subsequently completed internal medicine and specialist cardiology training at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, including training in advanced heart failure and cardiac transplant medicine. He completed a PhD in cardiovascular physiology at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, St. Vincent’s Hospital and UNSW. Following this, he spent two years in Boston where he completed a Clinical and Research Fellowship in Advanced Echocardiography at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University.
In addition to his clinical work, A/Prof. Namasivayam is actively involved in teaching and research. He is a Conjoint Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at UNSW and is Faculty and Laboratory Head, Heart Valve Disease and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, where he leads research into heart valve diseases using state-of-the-art cardiac imaging and machine learning techniques. He has published extensively in leading international medical journals, written multiple cardiology textbook chapters, speaks regularly at international meetings and serves as an expert reviewer for a number of international cardiology and cardiac imaging journals. A/Prof. Namasivayam serves on the Human Research Ethics Committee of St. Vincent's Hospital, Sydney. He has received several awards from national and international organisations including the American Heart Association, National Heart Foundation of Australia, Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, Royal Australasian College of Physicians, University of New South Wales and St. Vincent’s Clinic Foundation.
