I am a Lecturer at the School of Civil and Environmental Engineer at UNSW Sydney and Project Manager of the Nuisance and Harmful Algae Science-Practice Partnership. Previously, I was Chancellor's Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Deputy Leader of the Algal Biosystems Team at the University of Technology Sydney. I have a multidisciplinary scientific/engineering background with a BSc in Physics, an MSc in Sustainable Energy and a PhD in Biochemical Engineering, all from Imperial College London.

My Qualifications

PhD: Biochemical Engineering (2009-12) Imperial College London

MSc: Sustainable Energy Futures (2008) Imperial College London

BSc: Physics (2003-07) Imperial College London

My Research Activities

Good Algae

How to cultivate algal biomass in order to produce useful products such as biofuels, animal feed and sustainable chemicals.

Bad Algae

How to predict and control harmful algal blooms in the environment so as to preserve water quality and aquatic habitats.

My Research Supervision

Currently supervising

Jin Zhu – Ecophysiology of microbes that produce taste/odour and their impact on drinking water treatability

Rafael Paulino – Application of biological activated carbon to treat biogenic taste/odour compounds

Daisy Chu – Use of oxidation to reduce algal growth within drinking water treatment plants

Shuang Liu – Management of algal blooms in shallow waterbodies in a changing climate

Zijun Zhang – Improved harvesting of algal biomass by membrane filtration
