Dr. Jin Zhang is a Scientia Senior Lecturer at School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, UNSW Sydney. Dr. Jin Zhang is a Scientia Senior Lecturer at School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, UNSW Sydney. Before joining UNSW, she worked at Institute for Frontier Materials of Deakin University as a Senior Research Fellow and Sir Lawrence Wackett Aerospace Centre at RMIT University as a Research Fellow. She is a materials scientist who has extensive expertise in the preparation and functionalisation of nanomaterials, fibres, multi-scale structural composites, lightweight composite structures, functional textiles and polymer nanocomposites. As a mid-career researcher, she has published 90 scientific articles (including 1 book, 3 book chapters, 74 journal papers) and 2 records-of-invention. Her publications have received 2700 citations with an H-index of 27 (Google Scholar, July of 2020). The main research topics covered by these publications include advanced aerospace carbon fibre epoxy composite manufacture, lightweight composite structures, nanocomposite sensors and stretchable piezoelectric composites for energy harvesting, functional textiles, biological silk fibres and cocoon composites, multiscale and multifunctional composites, etc. Dr Zhang is a member of the American Chemical Society, Society of Plastics Engineers, the Australian Research Network for Advanced Materials, the Fibre Society and the American Vacuum Society. She chaired conference sessions for the 22nd International conference on composite materials (ICCM), the 89th Textile Institute World Conference and the Asian Textile Conference-13. She has been regularly invited to review paper submissions to key materials journals, such as Composites Science and Technology, Composites B, Composite Structures, Composites Part A, Nature Communication, Scientific Reports, etc. She is also an assessor for ARC Discovery, Linkage project applications and DECRA applications. Dr Zhang has supervised four PhD students through to completion. Their research topics cover "Flax yarn polymer matrix composites", “Manufacturing of bio-composites for automotive applications”, “Mechanically strong poly (vinyl alcohol)/ epoxy hydrogels” and “Heat and moisture transfer through silkworm cocoon walls”. She is currently supervising PhD students in the area of visible-light mediated 3D printing of polymers, bio- fire retardant composites, triboelectric nanogenerators. Dr Zhang has received about AUD 3 million research funding on 18 research grants from both national and university funding sources such as the Australian Research Council, Cotton Research and Development Cooperation, Transurban, Defence Science and Technology Group, and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, including a recent UNSW COVID-19 rapid response grant on rapid manufacturing of personal protective equipment.

Dr. Zhang was the recipient of Endeavour Fellowship from the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIISRTE) of Australian government in 2012 and the recipient of Victoria Fellowship from the Department of Victorian State Development Business and Innovation in 2013.
