Carley Bartlett is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the School of Law, Society and Criminology at UNSW Law & Justice, working on an ARC Linkage Grant focused on regulatory technology and non-urban water compliance and enforcement. Carley is an empirical researcher whose approach is informed by Science and Technology Studies, which she draws on to investigate sociotechnical conflicts that arise at the interface of law, science and technology.

Carley’s PhD research, which was completed in 2024, investigated PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) contamination in Australia as a case study for thinking about the mutual constitution of how we know (and don’t know) and how we regulate (and don’t regulate) environmental problems, and the role that impacted publics play in processes of public knowledge-making.

Prior to joining academia, Carley worked as a solicitor (environment and planning), as a tipstaff to the Chief Judge of the Land and Environment Court of NSW, and as a researcher at an environmental NGO.
