Derick is a Casual Academic at the University of New South Wales. Derick is an award-winning teacher specialising in criminal and media law and teaches in a range of law subjects. He has also delivered guest lectures at the University of Sydney and the University of Technology Sydney.
Prior to joining the Faculty, Derick worked at MinterEllison in dispute resolution and specialised in litigation related to defamation and class actions. His experience encompasses a wide range of complex and high-profile matters in defamation, corporations law, equity and trusts and insolvency. Derick's work as a practitioner has been widely recognised, through a number of industry awards such as the 30 Under 30 Law awards and the Financial Times awards.
Derick's teaching, research and practice focuses on the intersection of media freedom, defamation and national security. Derick has written on comparative criminal and constitutional law and democracy, including work on freedom of expression, defamation, press freedom and national security. He regularly makes submissions on criminal law matters.
