Dr James Wood is an applied mathematician with interests across a broad range from evolutionary and immunological processes to cost-effectivenesss evaluations for disease interventions. He completed his honours degree and PhD at the University of Queensland (both in mathematical physics). His primary application area is vaccine preventable diseases but he also has interests in tuberculosis and resistance in bacterial infections more broadly.

Dr James Wood is an applied mathematician with interests across a broad range from evolutionary and immunological processes to cost-effectivenesss evaluations for disease interventions. He completed his honours degree and PhD at the University of Queensland (both in mathematical physics). His primary application area is vaccine preventable diseases but he also has interests in tuberculosis and resistance in bacterial infections more broadly.

He has published over 50 papers in international journals, focussing on the impact and cost-effectiveness of vaccines on epidemiology, along with research related disease elimination and parameter estimation (particularly for measles). He was previously quite involved in research in emerging infections (particularly planning for influenza pandemics). His current interests are particularly in integrating genetic and immunologic elements into epidemiological models to account for trends in pathogen resistance and declining population immunity, with applications to infections such as pertussis, gonorrhea, tuberculosis and measles.

Current funded projects: 

James leads an NHMRC project grant (2017-) on modelling evolution of pertussis bacteria and the influence on vaccine efficacy. He is also a CI on a 2018- looking at modelling improvements to gonorrhoea control and approaches to containing resistance.

He is a CI on a 2015- funded NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence (Prism^2) in infectious disease modelling headed by A/Prof Jodie McVernon of University of Melbourne. James is also a CI on a large NHMRC funded community-wide wide trial of screening and treatment in Vietnam led by Professor Guy Marks. 

Potential research students: Students with a strong quantitative background and interest in population dynamics of infectious diseases should contact me by email (james.wood@unsw.edu.au). Broad areas of interest at present are: Gonorrhoea resistance dynamics and spatial spread, duration, efficacy and herd immunity from pertussis vaccination, control strategies to reduce Tuberculosis in high-burden countries, population immunity to measles in elimination settings.
