Biography

Research Interests:
Dr Stephenson is an Associate Professor in Social Science the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, whose research examines the relationships between public health and social and political change. Her current book project (co-authored with Prof. Susan Kippax) examines the global response to HIV and the role that response has played in the broader securitization of global public.

Research Activities

This Australian Research Council Discovery Project examines how Australia responded to H1N1 2009 (Swine flu) and similar outbreaks. Using in-depth interviews with everyday Australians and policy-makers, document analysis, and policy research workshops, the Project investigates the conditions of everyday life that influence how Australians think, feel and act with regard to pandemic influenza. It will also focus on the related challenges of: the prevention and treatment of influenza; the gaps between policy and everyday life; and the political ramifications of pandemic infectious diseases.…

With Dr Catherine Mills, VELiM, Usyd. This project examines how the widespread use of ultrasound in pregnancy might be effecting public debates about the ethics of abortion. Obstetric ultrasound is a routine aspect of pregnancy, and foetal images are a familiar part of our cultural landscape.
