Steve Colbran is an Associate Professor in the School of Chemistry, UNSW. He is expert in all facets of transition metal chemistry with especial skills in the design and uses of multifunctional ligands and in the electrochemistry of transition metal compounds.

Research Interests

  • Biological catalysis: using computational and synthetic models to uncover insights about multi-electron redox processes in biology, for example, in respiratory proton pumps and in nitrogen reductases.

  • Biomimetic catalysis: using biomimcry to discover new catalysts for multi-electron reduction processes.

  • Catalysis for a sustainable future: multi-electron reductions of carbon dioxide to methanol, a clean alternative transport(able) fuel.

  • Design, synthesis and use of transition metal systems with redox-active, multifunctional ligands.

  • Copper chemistry and its relevance to biology and medicine.
