Biography

Dr Kelly Thompson is a National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, Emerging Leader. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Public Health from the School of Population Health within the Faculty of Medicine at UNSW, Sydney. She is a Registered Nurse, with a Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Newcastle, with clinical experience in cardiothoracic intensive care.

Dr Kelly Thompson is a National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, Emerging Leader. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Public Health from the School of Population Health within the Faculty of Medicine at UNSW, Sydney. She is a Registered Nurse, with a Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Newcastle, with clinical experience in cardiothoracic intensive care.

In her role at The George Institute, Kelly has worked closely with the Global Women’s Health Program, a diverse and cross-disciplinary research program that aims to improve the health of women across the lifecourse with a focus on health equity and rights, particularly in relation to reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases. Since 2018 she has contributed to the development of women’s health related research strategy and capacity building teams across the Institute’s offices in Australia, China, India and the UK.

Kelly’s personal research interest is in health equity, with a focus on underserved populations in Australia and globally. Her primary research field is in the area of sepsis, where she works with the Australian Sepsis Network and the Critical Care Division, conducting research to understand and improve equity in health outcomes for survivors of critical illness, including women.
