Tay has an academic background in geography and economics with emphasis on aviation and tourism. His research interest involves measuring and explaining tourism development and its co-evolution with air transport network. In particular, he studies tourism as a vehicle towards understanding the links between aviation and sustainable development of regions. More recently, Tay has been collaborating with safety scientists and human factors experts at UNSW Aviation on research investigating how aviation safety information and remotely piloted aircraft technology affect travellers’ choice behaviour. In addition to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching portfolio in the area of sustainable aviation management, he has end-user focused research projects with both industry and government covering cognizant fields.
