Mr Alexander Mitchell Hynd

Alexander M. Hynd is a PhD candidate in international relations in UNSW's School of Social Sciences. He holds professional positions as Project Lead for Energy & Security in the Asia Pacific at UNSW's School of Social Sciences, Non-resident James A. Kelly Korea Fellow at Pacific Forum, Research Associate at UNSW's Korea Research Initiatives (KRI@UNSW), and Associate Fellow at the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA). Alexander also currently serves as book review editor for the Journal of Territorial and Maritime Studies.

His PhD thesis project, entitled 'Middle Power Identity Formation and Hierarchy in the Asia-Pacific', is under the supervision of Dr William Clapton and Dr Monika Barthwal-Datta. His broader research interests include English School and constructivist international relations theory, nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, international hierarchy,  maritime security, and middle powers in the Asia Pacific region - with a focus on Korean, Australian and Indonesian foreign policy. 

Alexander has has five years professional experience working in South Korea's political risk and crisis management industry, most recently for top-10 law firm DR&AJU LLC. Alexander received his MA in International Studies from Korea University in 2018, and his BA in Politics from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, in 2012.
