Ms Yvette Margaret Hamilton

Yvette Hamilton is an interdisciplinary artist and academic whose work explores the evolving medium of photography and vision in the current post-photographic era. Exploring the unseen and the unphotographable, at a time when everything is seen and photographed, her practice sits at the edges of the photographic medium and explores the way that it shapes human vision and its relationship to the real. Working with photography, video, programming, installation and interactivity, she combines early photographic techniques with post-photographic methodology to create new conditions for looking at the act of seeing.

She is Associate Lecturer in Photography and Moving Image at UNSW Art and Design and a current PhD candidate at the University of Sydney. Her ongoing doctoral thesis, entitled: Photography and the Black Hole: the Appearance and Disapperance of a Medium aligns pre and post photographic eras to the phenomenon of a black hole.

Yvette’s work has been shown in Australia and overseas in exhibitions at venues such as Pingyao International Festival of Photography, Lewisham Arthouse London, Perth Centre for Photography, Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and Dominik Mersch Gallery, Sydney. She has been a finalist in the Josephine Ulrick & Winn Schubert Award, the Paramor Prize, the Fishers Ghost Art Prize, the Meroogal Women’s Art Prize, the Grace Cossington Smith Award, the Iris Award and was the winner of the Sydney College of the Arts winner of the Dominik Mersch Gallery Award and a recipient of an Australia Council Artstart grant.
