,2013, 'A comparison of two multiple-point statistics approaches for characterisation of the Cressbrook Creek alluvial aquifer, Queensland, Australia', presented at Aquifer heterogeneity can have a profound effect on hydrogeological flow systems, but many three dimensional (3D) geological models ignore heterogeneity in favour of more simplistic representations. Multiple-point statistics is a stochastic modelling technique that addresses this issue by generating more realistic representations of aquifer heterogeneity compared to existing methods. It requires a statistical model of the heterogeneity (a training image) with the same dimensionality as the target domain, which is rarely available in 3D. In this study we assess and compare two approaches that allow circumventing the lack of 3D training images. In the first approach the 3D training images are simulated using a process-based technique. The other approach relies on simple bi-dimensional (2D) sketches, transformed in orientation and shape in order to obtain 3D simulations. The techniques are used to characterise the complex internal stratigraphy of the Cressbrook Creek alluvial aquifer system in southeast Queensland, Australia. Cressbrook Creek flooded in January 2011, and the 3D models generated here will be used to examine groundwater recharge processes during this flood. Particular emphasis is given to the effects of aquifer heterogeneity and its impact on surface water and groundwater connectivity. The 3D models are created using the information coming from 146 lithological logs, which were simplified into three facies codes based on grain size. Both techniques produce realistic representations of the aquifer. In each case, a preliminary calibration of the model parameters is required to fit the statistical properties of the dataset. However, the calibration procedures are significantly different. The process-based technique requires a forward geological structure simulator to generate the sedimentary environment; if this tool is available, then the main task is to set up its parameters. The approach based on 2D training images is more flexible because it does not require a process-based tool, however the set up requirements can be more complex because both the 2D sketches and the parameters used for the transformations must be assessed., Perth, Australia, 15 September 2013 - 20 September 2013
