Dr Manolete Mora

Biography

Manolete Mora (PhD Monash) is Associate Professor and Convenor of the Bachelor of Music at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. He received his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Monash University (Melbourne) and is an Andrew Mellon Fellow from the University of Pennsylvania. Manolete Mora (PhD Monash) is Associate Professor and Convenor of the Bachelor of Music at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. He received his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Monash University (Melbourne) and is an Andrew Mellon Fellow from the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests include music in the Philippines, Indonesia and Ghana, and Africans in China and, more generally, ethnography and popular music. He has published widely in musicological and anthropological journals and has produced CDs for Rykodisc and Smithsonian/Folkways. His monograph on Filipino indigenous music, published with Ateneo de Manila University Press, 2005, won the National Book Award for Folklore in 2006. He has also worked as a consultant for UNESCO projects amongst Tibetans and Mongolians in China. Performance activities include Balinese gamelan and Afro-Cuban music.

My Research Activities

Current research activities includes Southeast Asian epic song, specifically the T'boli Tudbulol (Mindanao) and the changing music culture of the Riau islands (Indonesia).


My Teaching

Areas of teaching include: World Music, popular music, musical ethnography, and more specifically, the musics of Indonesia, the Philippines, Ghana and Cuba.
