Simon is the Director of Learning and Innovation at UNSW Australia | Art & Design. After developing and teaching online courses in art and design for several years, he helped many other academics design and teach online through designing and convening a range of academic development programs. Simon has worked within a team pioneering learning and teaching approaches for fully online and blended education across several disciplines, and has helped establish an internationally recognised quality online learning reputation for the faculty and for UNSW.

Simon’s research focuses on the development of new online pedagogies to evolve education into a globally networked practice.

In 2006, his implementation of online learning and teaching research was nationally recognised by the Australia Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) by being co-awarded a Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning for ‘Pioneering internationally recognised best practice in online education in the creative arts and design’. In 2007, McIntyre’s research and design education practice led to the development and supervision of an international, fully online Master of Cross-Disciplinary Art and Design program for COFA. 2010 and 2011 saw Simon and his colleague Karin Watson working on the creation of a free resource for design educators worldwide called 'Learning to Teach Online', which has been received over 325,000 unique views, and has been incorporated in over 135 professional development and higher education programs by institutions around the world.

Simon’s recent work explores the potential of mobile technologies and open learning both on and off-campus. He has led the design and creation of a range of OER such as numerous educational videos, iTunes U content, and an award winning interactive iBook, which is currently featured on Apple Education’s US website. Apple Australia also invited Simon to talk about his work in mobile learning on a live global webcast.

In 2014 Simon lead the development of the Learning to Teach Online concept into a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). The design of this MOOC was based around the concept of personalised learning, enabling any type of educator around the world to build effective online teaching practices relevant to their own circumstances. This MOOC attracted 28,555 enrolments from 191 different countries. In the same year, based upon his work in this area, Simon was invited to speak about his vision of the future direction of higher education at the Vivid Ideas Festival in Sydney.

US President Barack Obama recently announced that the US Department of Education would provide free Verified Certificates in 50 high quality MOOCs for US teachers as part of its national program of continuing education accreditation. LTTO was the only Australian course to be chosen for inclusion. In addition, the Trinidad and Tobago government’s Knowledge TT program sponsored LTTO Verified Certificates for its population to enhance local learning opportunities.

Simon is also the academic lead of another MOOC called Transmedia Storytelling: Narrative worlds, emerging technologies, and global audiences. This industry relevant creative course was developed in conjunction with industry partner X Media Lab.

Through his continued research and online teaching practice, Simon hopes to continue to help develop strategies to improve the quality and delivery of online education across any discipline.
