I am now recruiting ILP student working on a project of cancer virome, which including half wet lab experiment and half bioinformatics. Bioinformatic skill is critical for modern medical research, for those students who want to do research in future, having experience in bioinformatics will give you an advantage for your PhD application.  Human virome is a new frontier research area with the help of next/third generation sequencing, the importance of virome in human disease are starting to be revealed in diseases like IBD (Norman 2015, Cell ), Colon Cancer (Nakatsu 2018, Gastroenterology) and HIV infections (Monaco 2016, Cell Host & Microbiome).  If you have interests in this project, contact me with email xiaotao.jiang@unsw.edu.au

My Current Research Interests:

Dr. Jiang leads the bioinformatics unit at the MRC and has involved in an extensive number of projects for human microbiome and diseases including liver cancer, colon cancer, IBD, schizophrenia and Parkinsons et. al. His current research focuses on the investigation of the role of enteric virome in different diseases. He is interested in developing bioinformatic algorithms and software to analyse next/third generation sequencing data for multi-omics data (metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and metabolomics). Another interest of Dr Jiang is antimicrobial resistance. He is interested in developing methods to combat the ever-increasing issue of antimicrobial resistance from the medical application.

My Background:

Dr Jiang completed his PhD in The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong. In his PhD study, he applied large-scale metagenomics sequencing to understand the activated sludge microbial ecology in a spatial and temporal dimension.  He developed ARGs-OAP to obtain the quantitative profiling of resistome for multiple shotgun metagenomics data, which is widely used in the AMR area.
