A/Prof Yanchuan Shi is a clinician scientist and group leader of Neuroendocrinology at the Garvan Institute, who has over 14 years of experience studying metabolic disorders, including obesity, diabetes, and related cardiovascular diseases. Her work utlizes sophisticated transgenic mouse models, cutting edge molecular technologies, and human samples to investigate critical pathways involved in the development of obesity and diabetes. Her combination of expertise in clinical practice and basic research provides her with a unique advantage in conceiving highly clinical relevant research ideas and setting up experiments to test these hypotheses in the lab.

My Grants

Since establishing her independent lab at Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Nov 2014, she has secured 3 NHMRC Project or Ideas grants as CIA or sole CI (2017, 2018, 2022), and 4 Diabetes Australia DART grants (category one) as sole CI (2016, 2018, 2019, 2021).

My Qualifications

Certificate from the Australian Medical Council (AMC); PhD from UNSW Sydney; MD from Harbin Medical University.

My Awards

Travel grant: ANZBMS Annual Scientific Meeting in Perth in 2005

WHO fellowship: Visit the Royal Adelaide Hospital for one year in 2001.

My Research Activities

  • Central and peripheral control of appetite, body weight, adiposity, and pancreatic beta cell function in obesity, diabetes, their related cardiovascular diseases (CVD) like hypertension, and osteoporosis.
  • Inter-organ cross talk, especially communication networks between the brain, fat tissue (white and brown) and pancreatic beta cells.
  • How lifestyle factors such as fasting, exercise and non-caloric nutrients (i.e. salt) modulate energy and glucose homeostasis, and inter-organ communication dynamics.
