Nigel Lovell is currently a Scientia Professor and Head of the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering, UNSW working in the areas of bionics, biomonitoring and physiological modelling.

His research and development work has covered areas of expertise ranging from web-enabling technologies, telehealth apps, biomedical instrumentation, biological signal processing and health data analytics, neurophysiology and physiological modeling. His principal research interests have been focused in the application of appropriate technology in primary health care and design of a bionic eye. He has published 700+ journal articles, books, chapters, patents, refereed proceedings and abstracts. He is a board member of the journal 'Physiological Measurement', a founding board member of the 'Journal of Neural Engineering' and an Associate Editor of 'IEEE journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics'.

For 2017-2018 he was President of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) which is the world's largest member-based biomedical engineering professional organisation. He is a Fellow of seven learned academies throughout the world and has been awarded over $80 million in research, consultancy and infrastructure funding in his career.

My Research Supervision

Areas of supervision

I have supervised more than 60 PhD students to successful completion. I am currently looking at accepting new students in the areas of health data analytics, implantable bionics, telehealth apps for managing chronic disease, and next generation neural interface technologies.

Research Activities

We propose the development of a comprehensive research framework for the next generation of home telecare technology. The framework will support the unattended recording of patient physiological data and allow patient management and information review by health professionals. It will include knowledge management tools to support clinical decision making. Research will also be conducted into the development of mobile community networks and ambulatory monitoring technologies based around Bluetooth piconets. The long term outcomes of this research will be improved patient health outcomes in…

The principal goal in controlling rotary blood pumps used as ventricular assist devices in heart failure patients is to mimic the natural heart behaviour so that the body's metabolic requirements are met while avoiding harmful states associated with over and under pumping. In this research we will create, evaluate and implement novel control algorithms that intelligently combine sensorless, non-invasive and invasive sensor signals to provide a robust preload sensitive flow controller for implantable rotary blood pumps that automatically adapts to varying patient conditions. Control…
