What are we studying?

Title:   BREATHE - mitigating airborne threats to health

This project aims to create new biophysical tools for single-molecule sensing by advancing the state-of-the-art in nanoscale bioelectronic devices.

Although the actin cytoskeleton has been known for some time to regulate vesicle trafficking, its exact role in this process is still unclear. This has largely been due to the difficulty in targeting specific actin filaments within the same cell.

Current Research

Smoking is a major cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor for people with mental illnesses such as psychosis and depression.

In Australia and among international researchers in smoking cessation, Robyn Richmond is among the very few who have been conducting research in general practice for almost four decades. Her work has resulted in significant changes in the practice of medicine where GPs now are trained in, and implement, smoking cessation interventions with their patients.

Our laboratory has identified alternatively activated macrophages as cells that have a key role in acute allergic inflammation. This project focuses on the mechanism by which a novel anti-inflammatory compound suppresses the activity of these cells.

This project focuses on requesters of Pathology investigations. Initially, it was primarily aimed at doctors undertaking prevocational training years, but it is now being extended to general practice registrars and advanced trainees in respiratory medicine.

Rationale / Background

My research program aims to better understand the causes of cancer and factors that influence outcomes after cancer diagnosis.

The number of overweight or obese people in Australia has increased dramatically in recent years, increasing disease risk. The brain responds to palatable food in ways similar to the response to drugs of addiction, and this may explain why people find it hard to resist palatable food.

This project seeks to provide insights into new mechanisms that could be used to enhance or inhibit neuronal signalling. The family of pentameric neurotransmitter receptors that are key components in the process of neuronal signalling and are the target of this study.

 

Chronic pain is a common debilitating symptom affecting between 50% and 80% of MS patients. However, despite its widespread occurrence, chronic pain is a rarely studied symptom of this disease.
