Research Interests:

I am the Professor of Health Leadership and Management, School of Population Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of New South Wales. I am a systems, organisational and improvement expert working across the health and community sectors. I have 35 years’ experience in having worked in metropolitan, regional and remote settings. I am dedicated to improving safety, quality and efficiency of organisations by: educating and mentoring professionals to lead, manage, and innovate in increasingly complex organisational and clinical environments; undertaking evaluations and assessments of wicked problems; performing strategic, policy and performance reviews; and, conducting collaborative translational research projects.

My organisational, educational and research work is at the intersection of improvement and implementation sciences. I have undertaken review, evaluation and research collaborations with colleagues internationally and within Australia. I investigate healthcare complex adaptive systems. I conduct collaborative research to derive strategies to improve the organisation, management and evaluation of services and facilities. Within and across these spheres I examine how to enhance efficiency, safety and quality outcomes. I work collaboratively with organisations to achieve efficiencies in systems and mechanisms to integrate research findings and evidence into strategy, policy and practice. This includes, for example, the formal or informal regulation of the organisation and delivery of care, via accreditation programs, organisational processes and policy or interprofessional collaboration strategies. The purpose of my organisational, educational and research endeavours is to derive evidence to improve organisational functioning, service delivery mechanisms and community outcomes.

I have been appointed to the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua): The International Academy of Quality and Safety (2018). I am recognised as an ISQua Expert (2012) and a Fellow of ISQua (2013). I am also a Fellow of the Australasian Association for Quality in Health Care (2011).
